Recently, a dear friend and I discussed our recurring nightly dreams. She’s had the same dream for the last couple of years. As we talked, I remembered the pattern of my dreams throughout high school and college. Those dreams felt more like nightmares as the theme was always the same. Every nightmare involved being chased by terrifying villains, developing super ninja skills to fight them off, and then escaping by the skin of my teeth. These dreams lasted for years, and they gradually vanished when I faced my demons and chose to heal. My memories and the conversation with my friend got me thinking about our dreams and perception of them. More importantly, I thought of the conscious dreams that we cherish and pursue. In this week’s blog, I share why our dreams and aspirations matter and how holding on to them can breathe new life into us.
Motivation
Dreams are a source of motivation. Life without aim or purpose is drudgery. It leads nowhere except down a black hole. When we set our sights on our future, we gain direction and inspiration. Although the end goal may feel larger than life, it still ignites the fire in us to pursue and persevere.
It is impossible to achieve the entire dream overnight, but as we chip away at it, we realize that we are capable of making our dreams a reality. Every small step in the direction of fulfilling our future is a nod to our grit and tenacity to exceed our potential.
Use your dreams as a challenge to rise above your current self. Ultimately, every ounce of blood, sweat, and tears will be worth it if you stay the course.
Authenticity
Dreams are a path to embracing and accepting our authenticity. No matter how homogenous our desires of being financially, professionally, and romantically successful, the need and purpose behind them are unique to each of us.
Your pursuit to achieve your vision is an extension of your true self. Only when you’ve deeply connected with that purpose and genuine you, can you begin to see your dream more clearly. It is at that point that chasing your dreams is equivalent to breathing air and achieving them becomes your life’s mission.
Your dreams may seem similar to others’ on a superficial level but resonate with the deeper purpose behind them to make them truly yours.
Faith
Dreams nurture and strengthen our faith in ourselves and the universe. Losing faith in mankind, life, and our potential comes easily, especially when we’re carrying scars and emotional baggage. Nevertheless, to have complete and unshakeable faith in our dreams is to have complete and unshakeable faith in ourselves. Limitless faith pushes us to pursue the unimaginable when the going gets tough, when all odds are stacked against us, and when it all seems impossible.
We have the capacity to rid ourselves of self-doubt and uncertainty when we have the conviction that dreams do come true. Although progress feels non-linear, when we believe in our dreams and, in turn, ourselves, we make the unthinkable happen.
Priorities
Dreams enable us to prioritize. When we are serious about fulfilling our dreams, we become better at putting weight on what matters. We stop depending on luck and start depending on our efforts.
We learn to say no to people and commitments that do not serve our larger purpose, and we learn to live a life that is intentional. Instead of coasting, we figure out how to make time for everything of value. Even when it feels like there are not enough hours in a day, we carve out the time and energy to inch closer to fulfilling our dreams.
You know your dreams are worth it, when you learn to collaborate, lean on others for support, set goals, plan, and pivot, as necessary.
Intuition
Dreams sharpen our intuitive tendencies. Anyone who has achieved their dreams has worked hard, remained consistent, and gotten excellent at listening to their heart and head. Pay attention to your gut feeling; it is an asset that will steer you in the direction of your dreams.
We can do everything in our power and play our cards right, but without connecting with our inner core, we miss out on fully realizing our dreams. After all, the truest of dreams stem from the most vulnerable and honest corners of our heart.
Listening to your gut is part of the gamble when chasing your dreams. Try not to silence it or, worse, ignore it.
Dreams help us make the impossible possible. That probability itself is mind boggling but tempting enough to explore and see them to fruition. Our dreams await us with bated breath as we journey towards them by reinventing, acquiring, and accepting.
